Can you believe how this year is flying by? It seems like just
yesterday we were welcoming those little ones into our room,
demonstrating our expectations, learning how to connect with this
new mix of students, and starting to share our love of music.
Hopefully, you have found that right mix of rhythm and balance as we
move toward the second half of our school year.
Balancing work and family is an important part of keeping yourself
healthy and focused. Are you staying calm in the midst of stressful
schedules or do you find yourself forgetting to take time to recharge
and renew your love for teaching? By taking time to keep yourself
healthy, you are allowing your students to see your joy and passion
for making music. My elementary music teacher was inspirational to
me by always maintaining that balance. She always made sure to
give her best at school, but used her family, church, and community
responsibilities as a way to re-center herself.
A big part of that balance is having an effective long range plan.
Establishing a year-long plan early in the year ensures that you are
maximizing your instructional time and maintaining a rigorous
curriculum. KMEA is an excellent resource as you look for strategies
and lessons to effectively carry out your plan.
KMEA is excited for our upcoming In-Service Workshop. By joining
us in Wichita, you can experience an excellent opportunity to
connect with teachers from around the state, share lesson plans,
and activities, as well as recharge your instruction as we head
toward the end of the school year. Our headliners this year include
Denise Gagne, Susan Brumfield, Michele Kashub & Janice Smith,
as well as our first ever KMEA All-State Elementary Choir conducted
by Elaine Quilichini, artistic director of the Calgary Girls Choir. Our
next issue of the KMR will provide more details regarding our
sessions.
It's never too early to consider submitting a recording of your
performance group for consideration of our 2017 ISW. A quality
recording of varied repertoire is always encouraged. If you have any
questions about the selection process, be sure to visit the KMEA website and learn more about
Performance Groups opportunities.
I would encourage you to put ISW 2016 on your calendar and hope
to see you there!
