James Bennett "J. B." Webster, 87, died February 1, 2016 in Great Bend, Kansas. Born October 10, 1928 in Dexter, Missouri, he began his teaching career at Minneola, Kan. He was a United States Army veteran serving during the Korean Conflict with the 10th Division Army Band at Fort Riley. After his service in Army, he became band director at St. John and Hays schools, and then became instrumental music instructor and golf coach at Barton Community College in Great Bend. Mr. Webster retired in 1991 but remained active in the Great Bend music scene, serving as a member of his church choir, playing trombone in multiple music ensembles for Barton CC and numerous Great Bend music groups. As a 65-year member of MENC, J.B. Served KMEA as a district secretary, district vice president and president, and was a charter member and past president of Kansas Bandmasters Association. In 1987, he was recognized as KBA "Outstanding Bandmaster." He was also inducted into the Barton Community College Sports Hall of Fame in 2004 in recognition of his years as the college's golf coach.
