Greetings from the Southwest District!

We would like to recognize the recipients of our "Outstanding Educators" awards for this year. Receiving the middle school award is Kim Stewart, who teaches vocal K-8 in Haviland as well as Kiowa County High School in Greensburg. Mike Quilling is our high school award recipient; he is the Director of Instrumental Music at Deerfield. Our elementary award recipient is Grant Mathews, who teaches in Liberal at Cottonwood Intermediate and Sunflower Intermediate. The "Outstanding Administrator" award will be presented to Kenneth Bockwinkel, Superintendent at Greeley County Public Schools. Congratulations to all!

On Saturday, November 8, 2014, the middle school honor choir, middle school honor band, high school honor jazz band, and high school honor choir auditions will be held at Dodge City Middle School. The middle school choir clinician will be Dr. Mark Lucas, from Bethany College. The middle school band clinician will be Craig Allison from Lyons High School, and Nick Schroeder from Hutchinson Community College will direct the high school jazz band.

The high school honor choir, high school honor band, and high school honor orchestra will rehearse and perform on Saturday, December 6, 2014, at Dodge City High School. Our high school honor choir clinician will be Dr. Brian J. Winnie, Director of Choral Activities & Voice at Southwestern College. The high school honor band clinician will be Dr. Lane Weaver, director of Bands at Fort Hays State University. Dan Racer from Friends University will conduct the SW/NW Orchestra.

On December 6, 2014, at Dodge City High School, district instrumental directors will meet at 9:00 a.m. and vocal directors will meet at 10:00 a.m. to discuss new State KMEA information and other district business. Our annual Southwest District business meeting will take place at 1:00 p.m. Please attend!

The elementary choir festival will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2015, at Dodge City Middle School with Candy Asmus of Newton, KS conducting. A district meeting of elementary music educators will also take place.
