The KMEA Composition Competition is pleased to announce our 2014 winner, Scott Hershberger, a junior from Maize High School in Maize, KS. Scott's work, Tale of the Forgotten for solo piano will be performed by the composer at the opening of the ISW Thursday Evening Concert.

The second place winner is Logan Nelson for his work, Spontaneous Accounts. Logan is a senior from Wichita East High School. Composed for unaccompanied alto saxophone, this piece will also be performed on the Thursday Evening Concert. Logan's Sonata for String Quartet was named last year's competition winner.

Categories for the competition include Electronic music, Solo Instrument/Voice, and Ensemble. The ensemble category consists of two sub-categories; one is for 2-6 players and one for 7 or more players, including choral works. New for 2015-16 will be a fourth category for Jazz compositions. This will also be divided into two sub-categories for combo (up to 7 players) and large ensemble (8 players and up). Students are given commentary and feedback on their original music by a nationally recognized panel of composers. This year's panel consisted of Dr. David Holsinger, Dr. Kenneth Fuchs, and Dr. Andrew Poor. All are prominent music educators and featured composers with TRN Music, Hal Leonard and Barnhouse Publications.

Students of all ages and interests are encouraged to submit works for the competition. For more information, go to the Composition Competition page under the programs tab of the KMEA website.
