Workshop and conference news:
- Kansas Music Educators Association In-Service Workshop: KMEK was well-represented at KMEA 2014. We hosted the annual family folk dance and had two other sessions led by KMEK members. Finally, we enjoyed sponsoring Andrew Ellingsen's return to Kansas to represent Kodály at our KMEA!
- Susan Tevis (WSU's level III instructor) will be our April 12th presenter. Theme: favorite K-2 songs and games, AND how to connect students' existing knowledge of musical concepts and songs to the performance and experiencing of great art music (this will include 2-, 3-, and 4-part literature). We will finish the day with our annual "level prep" sessions for this summer's certification course students.
- NAfME Kodály session: Congratulations to Jordan Northerns, Matt Hanne, and Mary Halsig for being accepted to present at the national NAfME conference in October 2014! They hope to bring a small middle school band to demonstrate secondary-level, Kodály-inspired activities in choral and instrumental settings.
Kodály Music Educators of Kansas is having a fabulous year already! We have a new and unique website, enjoy a strong partnership with local Kodály certification courses, and will be celebrating our 10th anniversary as a chapter this year. Please see www.kmek.org for more details. Our website now hosts password-protected video footage from workshops. Participants can access this footage after a workshop and review the presenter's ideas, activities, and techniques. We will soon expand this repository to include teaching videos taken during the Kodály certification courses at Wichita State University. With these videos, our members will be able to quickly see how their peers teach a specific song, game, or concept.
The KMEK chapter is highly supportive of the Kodály teacher certification program at Wichita State University. This year's certification courses will be June 1st-June 13th (see our website for more information). KMEK provides a lending library of unique resources for the participants, holds an interest meeting to encourage chapter membership, offers mentoring support, and donates daily snacks. KMEK also provides an extension of the Level III course by giving the most recent graduates an opportunity to present a tag-team lesson at one of our upcoming KMEK workshops. Our members enjoy the fresh stream of "home-grown" presenters. These graduates become leaders in our chapter and bring excitement and a sense of ownership to the workshops.
Our Facebook page has over 130 members (check out " Kodály Music Educators of Kansas" on Facebook to stay connected). KMEK also has 33 OAKE members and many more associate participants who are active in our chapter. We are excited about what is happening in Kansas!
