Marcia Neel - ISW Presenter

Marcia Neel will be a featured presenter during the February 2014 KMEA In-Service Workshop. A strong vocal Music Education advocate at the local, state, and national level, she serves on the Supportmusic.com Steering Committee. She has authored and edited an array of articles and publications for NAfME, the National Association for Music Education, School Band and Orchestra (SBO) Magazine, Strings Magazine, Parent Magazine and Leadership Magazine. Marcia and her husband serve as Music Ambassadors to The Ohio State University School of Music.

An experienced secondary music educator in several public school systems, Marcia most recently has served as the Supervisor of the Secondary Music Education Program for the Clark County School District, Las Vegas. She is nationally recognized by peers for her creative approaches to music curricular design and implementation. One of her large projects includes the Mariachi Program, a standards driven program which she developed and instituted with four instructors in the Clark County District. This program has expanded to include 23 full-time licensed mariachi educators, 2 full-time Mariachi paraprofessionals, and 3 full-time Ballet Folklorico educators serving over 3000 students. Marcia successfully leads the National Mariachi Workshops for Educators.

Marcia has served as Western Division President of MENC, President of the Nevada Music Educators Association (two separate terms), and President of the Nevada Choral Directors Association. Marcia is president of Music Education Consultants, Inc., a consortium of music education professionals working with a variety of educational organizations, arts associations, and school districts to foster the growth and breadth of school-based music education programs for all children.

Marcia will be offering three presentations during the ISW:
  • Modern Classroom with Thanks to Modern Family! - a sharing of successful innovative music programs from across the country focused on engaging today's students beyond the traditional music education mode.
  • How to Successfully Recruit and Retain Instrumental Music Students - an exploration of available tools useful in recruiting and retaining instrumental music students. This session is based upon best successful practices.
  • Interviewing Skills; The Rules of the Road - an explanation of what administrators are expecting in new music educators and how to successfully prepare a resume and for an interview. This will be an excellent session for new and pre-service educators.
