Northeast District Report
Laura VanLeeuwen
President
I am currently in my 14th year of teaching and "inspiration" is a word I find myself constantly thinking about inside and outside of my classroom. Inspiration is defined many different ways; however, for me it means to: motivate, awaken passion, and be a role model for others. I think inspiration was a powerful word when we chose to be music educators, we were inspired by someone in the field of music.

In my classroom, I teach students about life through music. I emphasize the importance of finding something to be passionate about in your life, simply, to find inspiration. I have found that through the continual learning process, and by wearing many hats in my job, I create an inspirational environment for my students.

I also find inspiration through my family and community of friends. They are constant reminders that to truly inspire, there must be a balance in my life. Music education is a big part of my life, but I have other hobbies and interests that have led me down different paths. These experiences have made me a better teacher and have given me additional knowledge to seek inspiration.

Through the Northeast District Board, the KMEA leadership, and countless community members including parents and teachers, I have been inspired by a variety of ideas, work ethics, and teamwork in music education. Our Northeast District has truly mastered the vertical concept of the December mini- convention and I look forward to many wonderful performances on Saturday, December 3.

It has been an honor and privilege to be the Northeast District President and I hope to continue serving KMEA in any way I can. I wish you all the best as the school year continues and may you always find inspiration through others and music.
