To China and Back
I just returned from a wonderful educational trip to China, where I, along with my family, had the opportunity to visit/teach in three Chinese classrooms. Our music lesson for more than one hundred eighth and ninth graders included rhythmic activities, singing, and folk dancing. As I watched the Chinese students participate in our activities, I was reminded of the incredible value of music in our lives. Even though I did not speak the students' language, the connection of music brought us together.
After introductions and musical greetings, we began with the folk dance, "Alabama Gal" from Peter and Mary Alice Amidon. After showing the American students how to perform the dance, several of the Chinese students joined the fun. The joy on their faces was priceless. They were truly enjoying the dance while we sang the verses. I was amazed at how quickly they leaned the dance and became engaged. Other activities in the lesson included a musical greeting, the song "Hello Everybody" (using body percussion and American instruments that I brought from my classroom), the song "Bump Up Tomato" (a short English version about Kansas symbols and pictures), and finally, "Home on the Range," our Kansas State Song.
As we begin another year of making music with our students, I challenge you to be passionate about what you do in the classroom. No doubt, there have been many cuts in your district which may have you wondering why you chose to teach music. While this may be disheartening, keep your passion alive by focusing on creating the best musical opportunities for the students every day. We each have unique gifts to share. Be purposeful by engaging students in well-planned lessons. What goes on in the classroom is a reflection of you, so soar high!
I would like to welcome Jennifer Donovan, Assistant KMEA Elementary Chair. She has presented numerous sessions at the KMEA In-Service Workshop, most recently in 2011. Jennifer's musical expertise and experience will be wonderful additions to the elementary position. If you have not met her, you can do so at the KMEA ISW, February 23 through 25, 2012. I hope to see you all at the KMEA ISW! Make plans now to attend and learn from other Kansas teachers and out-of-state clinicians.
The Amidons will begin the KMEA ISW Thursday with two awesome sessions beginning at 2:00 p.m. SAVE THE DATE: COMMUNITY FOLK DANCE BY THE AMIDONS ON THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 2012, AT THE KMEA ISW FROM 7:00-7:50 p.m. IN THE ELEMENTARY ROOM. SPREAD THE WORD! Hope to see you there.
I wish you success as we begin another school year. I am sure that, whether this is your thirtieth or first year, you will have much to learn as you strive to give your best to students. Music is such a powerful way to connect all people in the United States or abroad. I look forward to hearing your stories at the KMEA ISW!
