Each year the Kansas Music Educators Association seeks
nominations of administrators from across the state who are truly
outstanding supporters of music and the other arts in their
schools. This year we are pleased to present this honor to Dr.
Alison Banikowski, Deputy Superintendent for the Olathe Public
Schools.
Dr. Banikowski, or Dr. B as she is affectionately called, began her
career as a music educator teaching both general and vocal music
at Patton Jr. High at Fort Leavenworth. She came to Olathe in
1983 first as a specialist in learning disabilities, and then going on
to serve as an elementary principal, director of elementary
education, assistant superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction,
associate superintendent of Teaching and Learning and in her
current position as Deputy Superintendent.
The letters of nomination and support on Dr. Banikowski's behalf
share a common theme: a clear vision, staunch support, and
exemplary advocacy for music education in the Olathe schools
and throughout the Olathe community.
- In his nomination letter Randy Detrick wrote: "Her devotion for
always doing 'what's best for kids' spans all curricular areas but
the special attention she has given to music education sets her
apart from her peers. During her tenure Dr. Banikowski's
insistence that music is not merely an activity but a curricular
subject on par with the core subjects has set the foundation for
building an exemplary music program in Olathe."
- Olathe Board of Education member, Amy Martin wrote:
"Through Dr. Banikowski's determination and leadership, our
music program has remained a high priority during this ongoing
financial crisis. As a board member I am under constant pressure
to prioritize spending and find ways to trim budgets. Alison
makes it a priority that our board is regularly reminded of the
many personal and educational benefits of participating in music,
unequivocally insisting it IS one of the basics. Because of her
efforts I am proud to say that music education has actually
expanded in the Olathe School District in recent years."
- In another letter of support Gretchen Harrison wrote: "Without a
doubt, the strongest element I recognize in her as unique is her
deeply personal understanding of the music rehearsal, ensemble,
and performance—from every perspective. You see, Dr.
Banikowski started out her career as a middle school choir
teacher. She is that rare person who can remember where she
came from to make the future for everyone a much better place."
Dr. Banikowski is the kind of administrator that all music
teachers dream of working with. We appreciate her support of
music education, and we are proud to honor her as the 2016
KMEA Honor Administrator!
