Web & Technology
Tech @ ISW
As we approach the 2016 In-Service Workshop, here is an overview of some tech resources available for attendees.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or suggestions.
ISW Website Mobile web technology has become a very important part of how information is distributed. KMEA has for several years employed a mobile-optimized website to deliver ISW-related information directly to your mobile devices during the In-Service Workshop. The "ISW Website" which launched last year makes a return at the same URL (http://isw.ksmea.org). The ISW website is not a mini-version of the KMEA website. It contain some organization-related information, but the focus is primarily on ISW info:
This website is a "responsive" design, meaning it can be viewed on any size of device (desktops, tablets, smartphones). Regardless of which device you prefer, ISW info will be readily available to you. On-Site Registration & Voting KMEA will again offer a bank of computers at the ISW registration area on which members may complete on-site registration. There will not be any online balloting this year. Voting primarily happens at the ISW in odd-numbered years. However, from this point forward, any KMEA member who wishes to vote in a future ballot at either the state or district level must create an account in our new KMEA Members website (http://members.ksmea.org) which is done by authenticating your NAfME membership and self-selecting a password. This system was first used for balloting at the KMEA district level in December 2015. Hall of Fame Digital Display

Century II Wi-Fi Century II has closed off free public access to its Wi-Fi signal. Anyone wishing to utilize their Wi-Fi will need to purchase access directly from Century II. Over the past two years, Century II has contracted with an outside vendor to vastly upgrade and expand Wi-Fi service throughout the facility. There are now over 300 access points installed. More info has been posted on the KMEA website: ksmea.org/century-ii-internet-rates Clinicians ISW clinicians are invited to send in material for a profile page in the ISW website. Clinicians can include their picture, a bio, and any hand-out materials that they might wish to make available for download. isw.ksmea.org/clinicians_.php Exhibitors Our ISW Exhibitor lists contain links to exhibitor's websites. We encourage everyone to support our exhibitors. Without their participation, the ISW would not be possible. isw.ksmea.org/exhibits_.php Performance Repertoire Several years ago, KMEA stopped providing printed repertoire lists at ISW in favor of an online list. Directors of the Performance Groups are able to login and update their performance repertoire. The update screen also gives directors a means of calculating total music duration in order to plan the entire performance and avoid going overtime. Upon saving their updates, the new repertoire selections are then immediately viewable in the ISW website. isw.ksmea.org/perf_groups_.php Lodging We have a list of hotels offering special ISW rates. Don't forget to release any room reservations that you won't be using. The hotels can then reserve those rooms for other attendees. isw.ksmea.org/info_.php?#lodging Schedule - isw2016.ksmea.org The ISW schedule is being published in two locations this year. As before it will be included in the ISW website, along with the new location linked above. Visitors may sort & filter events by date, by venue, or by strand (subject) to quickly find each event. The above link offers a way to create your own customized ISW schedule. I am looking at possible ways to build custom scheduling into the ISW website. If that happens, it will likely depend on having your accounts set up in the Members site, linked above, so the ISW site can keep track of your individual selections. Twitter Updates Be sure to follow us on Twitter (@ksmea) as we will use that service as our primary means of short-notice announcements during the ISW. You do not need to be a Twitter user in order to receive our messages. In the text messaging app on your cellphone, send follow @ksmea to 40404. You'll start receiving our updates via regular text message. To opt out, text unfollow @ksmea, also to 40404. Registration Last, but definitely not least, registration for ISW is handled online. For active members, there are several payment options. You may pay online with a credit card (via PayPal, includes a small surcharge to cover our costs), by mail-in form, or (for $10 more) in person at Wichita. systems.ksmea.org/iswreg We continue to look for ways in which technology can be used to improve the ISW experience. If anyone knows of an app that will auto-tune my singing, keep it to yourself. For a tuba player, I think I sing just fine. See you in Wichita! Return to top |
