Schedule of Events

9:00 - 9:50 AM
Have You Forgotten What It's Like to Be a Child?

It's been anywhere from 15 to 70 years since any of us have been child. Wendy suggests that we may have forgotten what it is like to be a child. She asks these questions:
  • What are students thinking during class or lessons?
  • How do they see things differently than we do?
  • Why do they act the way they do?
  • Are there any principles to finding the perfect repertoire for them?
  • Why don't students practice certain pieces?
  • Why do they like that piece and not this piece?
  • What's the special "magic sauce" that will guarantee that they will love music class or lessons?

Wendy will revisit childhood behaviors and show us how to choose music and how to engage students in every lesson or class. She will demonstrate how to ensure they will continue lessons, by motivating and challenging them so that they leave every single class and lesson feeling excited and competent.

Included in this presentation will be samples of Wendy's music along with stories about how they are designed to reach into the core of a child and pull out excitement for music. The majority of this session will contain many immediately useful tips on how to connect with students.

10:00 - 10:50 AM
Rhythm Practice SHOULD Be Fun. Here's How to Make it Happen...

Have you heard of cup tapping to teach rhythm? It's taking the music-teaching world by storm. In this session, Wendy demonstrates how students can have a super fun time cup tapping, jumping, high fiving, and doing all kinds of fun antics where they can learn how to internalize rhythm. Wendy will describe how to ensure that students read rhythms accurately with each weekly assignment and provide tips on what to do and what NOT to do in teaching rhythm.

11:00 AM - 12:15 PM
KMTA Honors Recital Rehearsal

12:30 - 1:30 PM
KMTA Honors Recital & Reception

The Honors Recital features solo performances by winners of the MTNA and KMTA Fall Honors Auditions held in November of 2014. Students from grades 1 through university level will perform on piano, woodwinds, brass and strings. Following the recital, KMTA teachers will host a reception at the Wichita Public Library, located just across the street from Century II. Students, teachers, family and friends are invited to attend.
