Greetings from Southeast District!
To start this article, I'm going to borrow words from our three district Honors Educators. I have very much enjoyed reading the philosophies that the honorees have sent in but, even more so, I have enjoyed reading the reference letters submitted by their colleagues and community members about the impact that they have had on the lives of those that they teachand touch.
"I believe that music is a unique discipline that integrates
science, math, reading, physical education and history into its
curriculum, thus, providing students with a well-rounded and
holistic education. Many other invaluable "real world" lessons
such as teamwork, respect and tolerance can be taught and
fostered through music instruction. Through music, students
can learn to express themselves and be creative in ways other
disciplines do not allow."
Rebecca Logan, USD 247 - Cherokee Outstanding Elementary Music Educator
"Music is part of what it means to be human. This is why I
believe it should be included in every child's education. There
are many skills that music helps develop and emotional needs
that it helps fill. The absence of music classes in education
would leave a hole in the lives of students that in my opinion
could not be filled by the study of other academic subjects."
Rhonda Harrison, USD 506 - Labette County Outstanding Middle School Music Educator
"Music is a powerful force! As a music educator, I realize that
music is an emotional security for many students. Music is so
much more than notes and rhythms on a page. Music is a
discipline that prepares students for success in all areas of life.
Music is a universal language that can spark emotions,
promote creativity, provide inspiration and perhaps change a
mood. Music reaches deep into the human spirit and has the
power to connect people. Music is about more than concerts
and rehearsals. Music is about who you become along the
way!"
Congratulations to these fine people who contribute so much to
our profession! One cannot doubt that these educators - and
countless other like-minded music educators throughout our
district and state - have touched the lives of numerous students
and helped shape them into what they might not otherwise have
become. Music is indeed powerful.
Gae Phillips, USD 493 - Columbus Outstanding High School Music Educator Our district has a new executive director-in-training. Gary McCarty has been serving as executive director for the past several years and had expressed a strong interest in fully retiring at the end of the current school year. Alan Paxson, Chetopa, has agreed to take on that position and is training to take over from Gary next summer. Thanks Gary and best wishes for the future. Our chairs and facility managers are busy preparing for our district's upcoming events. We are looking forward to having the following clinicians work with our 2013-2014 honor ensembles:
