Life is full of changes!

A wise friend once told me that one thing you can count on in life is CHANGE. I didn't fully understand that statement until last March. The school board voted to close five schools and my school was on the list. I was in shock. I couldn't even imagine teaching at another school in the district. If any of you have been in that situation, you know exactly what I am talking about. After teaching at this school for twenty-one years, I was experiencing "kids of kids." It was a place that I loved to be at each day. I had good relationships with students, parents, and staff. However, in May, the doors closed after thirty-seven years.

Many of you may be experiencing a "change" this fall. Perhaps you are a first year teacher starting your career as a music teacher. No doubt, you will experience many changes as you transition from being a university student to becoming a music teacher. I won't go into details, but I do hope you will stay connected with new and old mentors who will help you along the path of your teaching career. Some of you may have changed schools for a variety of reasons. There may be a new principal or staff members at your school. All of these things will change what you considered "normal" last year.

I would encourage you to look at this change as a positive new direction in your life and incorporate the skills and talents that you have learned to foster excellence in your classroom. As things around you may change, (and they will), you will still know what it takes to be an effective teacher.

As for me, I will begin a brand new direction with the school district. I am excited about this new challenge in my life. I hope that each of you will begin the fall with a new burst of energy and a willingness to learn new things. My best to each one of you as you begin a new school year!

Happy Music Making!
