Highlights from 2011 KCOMTEP
Every fall the Kansas Conference of Music Teacher Education Professors
(KCOMTEP) holds a session in conjunction with a state meeting and workshop
event for NAfME Collegiate chapters. This year, the collegiate activities and
KCOMTEP session were hosted in Wichita by Senseney Music and Wichita State
University during the weekend of October 8 and 9. Emily Foerschler, KMEA NAfME
Collegiate President, and Elaine Bernstorf, Wichita State University,
organized the events. Collegiate chapter members enjoyed a variety of
workshops and panel discussions that included such topics as: choosing
literature, instrument repair, what to expect the first year of teaching, and
an introduction to the Orff approach of teaching music. The workshops were
well-attended by collegiate chapters from across the state. The following day,
KCOMTEP and collegiate members held meetings and attended sessions on creative
and critical thinking by Matthew Garrett, a choral music education specialist
from Case Western Reserve University. The fall joint sessions of KCOMTEP and
NAfME Collegiate members have been occurring for several years, and provide
unique opportunities for students and teachers to interact, share ideas, and
strengthen professional ties between current and future music educators.
Attendees participate in learning activities at the 2011 KCOMTEP conference.
