What is YOUR plan?

Fall is in full swing and if you are like me, you long for those peaceful, relaxing, summer days! However, fall does not have to be a crazy time if you have a plan in place. First of all, be flexible, because even the best teachers have a bad day. In my twenty plus years of teaching, I have found a sense of humor to be of great value. I also suggest you insist on high expectations. Over time, your students, colleagues, and parents will understand the value of a high quality music education program. It takes careful planning and attention to details, but in the end it is well worth the time and extra effort.

Second, you should stay connected with other music teachers and make it a point to attend music workshops. Both of the Kodály and Orff Chapters held informative workshops this fall. Make time for worthwhile events that keep you growing and help you to inspire young minds every day. It is also a great way to bounce off ideas and concerns with other music teachers in the state. Third, take some time for yourself. Get the rest and rejuvenate you will need for the weeks ahead. A well-rested mind and body makes a much better educator in the classroom. This is my simple but meaningful plan that gives me focus and direction each day. What is important is that YOU have a plan.

On another note, it is not too early to consider submitting an audition recording of your choir, classroom/combined classrooms, Orff ensemble, or another performing group for a performance at the February 21-23, 2013, KMEA In-Service Workshop. Check the exact day in May which will be posted on line at: www.ksmea.org. A quality recording is always recommended and I hope to hear many submissions this June, 2012.
[Webmaster's note: Performance Group applications are normally posted on or near March 15 each year.]

I look forward to seeing you at the KMEA ISW, February 23-25, 2012. The next KMR will highlight our clinicians. Plan now to attend!
