Tri-M Chapter Receives National Honor

2010 - 2011 Tri-M Junior Division
First Runner Up for Chapter of the Year
Lakewood Middle School, Salina, Kansas
Lindsay Modin, Chapter Advisor
The Lakewood Middle School Tri-M Chapter was recognized as the NAfME Junior Division Chapter of the Year First Runner Up for 2011. Last year, Lakewood was selected as the 2010 Junior Division Chapter of the Year. This dynamic chapter has continued to be actively involved in their school and community with many service projects and events.

The students started the fall semester by helping with the district 4th grade Orchestra Enrollment Night. In December, they caroled at a local retirement community and took donations of several needed items to the Salina Animal Shelter. In January, they helped move the Chapman School District into their new buildings after the June 2008 tornado damaged most of the schools in that district. February events included selling singing valentines and holding a bake sale during parent-teacher conferences.

During the spring semester chapter officers attended the KMEA ISW and the chapter organized a variety of events for MIOSM at their school. Students contacted school staff and asked them to share a favorite musical moment or memory. These were shared during morning announcements for the month of March. The TriM students also held various trivia contests and hosted a recital for students who were preparing solos and small ensemble pieces for contest. Additional spring projects included: hosting a "Pennies for St. Jude Children's Hospital" competition for which they collected coins and were recognized on a local radio station; beginning a "Music Mentors" program where chapter members helped each other with school work; assisting at several orchestra concerts; and organizing social events throughout the semester.
